Michigan Steinway Artist Profile: The Mack Sisters
Japanese born duo-pianists Yuki and Tomoko have dazzled audiences on three continents, performing works for one-piano, two-pianos and duo with orchestra. Arriving in the United States as children they eventually settled in Michigan, studied with Brazilian pianist, Flavio Varani and the late Joyce Adelson at Oakland University and later with Louis Nagel at the University of Michigan.
In 1994, after winning strong recognition as soloists, Yuki and Tomoko melded their artistry into an award-winning piano duo. They won prizes in several prestigious international competitions: First and Kodama Prize at the Fourth International Piano Duo Competition in Tokyo; the Dranoff International Two-Piano Competition in Florida; and the Ellis Two-Piano National Competition in South Carolina. The Duo has been featured in the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival in Michigan, the Symposium for Two-Pianos in Florida and the Quebec International Two-Piano Festival. Frequently, they join the faculty of the International Summer Music Festival in Naleczow, Poland.
They have toured the United States and abroad performing in small communities and major cities such as: New York, Los Angeles, Milan, Tokyo, and in Stockholm and Warsaw, where their concerts were broadcast live. Popular components of their concert tours are the master classes and “Informance” programs for student and family audiences.
The Duo has produced three highly acclaimed CDs which include a diverse repertoire of one-piano and two-piano works: Rhapsody, American Mosaic and Fantasy. Their fourth CD, Danse Montage, has been released in 2009.
Steinway Artists are in no way remunerated for their insistence on playing exclusively Steinway pianos. Yet a wide majority of the world’s pianists passionately prefer the Steinway for their professional engagements year after year.
