Henry Z. Steinway’s personal piano now on display
at Steinway Piano Gallery
One of the most famous pianos in the world is now available for you to see right here in Michigan. On September 7, 1944, Theodore Steinway, then President of the firm, gave his son, Henry Z. Steinway and Henry’s wife, Polly a Steinway Model L Mahogany grand piano. This piano resided in the home of Henry & Polly from 1942 until Polly’s death in 2009. It is personally signed by Henry Steinway, the last Steinway family President of the firm. His signature on the harp inside the piano reads: My Piano, Henry Steinway…
This piano will only be in Michigan for a short time.

On April 28, 1893 Ignacy Paderewski said he would not perform at the World's Fair without a Steinway........
They got him one.
Read the behind the scene information on one of the great piano stories of all time. It is a reminder that the artists of the past and the artists of today have one thing in common…their insistence on performing with the Steinway.

Educator Spotlight
Peter Cartwright
Peter Cartwright obtained both his B.A. and M.A. in piano performance from Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan. He was awarded a scholarship for the senior year of his B.A. from the Michigan Foundation for the Arts. He was also awarded a graduate assistantship for the first year of his master's program, and graduated with honors for both degrees.
Peter has been a past President and Program Coordinator for the National Guild of Piano Teachers in Oakland County. As a church musician, he also performs on the organ and conducts a choir. Although his degrees are in classical piano performance, he is equally adept at performing jazz, pop and boogie-woogie. He loves to do ear training with his students, and believes in a flexible/individual approach for each student.

Duplex Scale
This month in the year 1872, C.F.T. Steinway collaborated with acoustician and physiologist Hermann von Helmholtz to create the Duplex Scale. The invention corrected the dead sections of a piano string, allowing the full length of each string to vibrate for a richer tone and longer sustain.
"The more I hear its nuances of sounds, the more I realize the wealth of colors only a Steinway piano can produce." -Murray Perahia
