Western Michigan University “All Steinway School" Initiative continues with the delivery of new Steinway Designed Boston Pianos

On the week of March 1st, Western Michigan University School of Music took delivery of 10 new Steinway designed Boston 118S studio pianos. 10 Steinway designed Essex 123S Studio pianos are in transit from Steinway and will be delivered to the school shortly.  The delivery of these pianos are just part of the university’s piano-replacement program and initiative to become an "All-Steinway School," a university that has at least 90 percent Steinway-designed pianos, which include Boston and Essex brands. For information about the “All-Steinway School” program, call Wilbur Miller at 248-560-9200, Ext 304.

Fascinating YouTube Video of the Late John Steinway
Now On-Line

A video of the late John Steinway (Great grandson of the founder Henry E. Steinway) has recently surfaced on You Tube. This video (in two parts) was a talk given to the Astoria Historical Society in February 1979 about the history of the early days of Steinway. Anyone interested in the piano and especially the Steinway will find this video captivating. John Steinway was an articulate spokesman for the company and a dear friend to those in the Detroit area Steinway family.

Hundreds of Piano Students Converge on Steinway Piano Gallery for Student Achievement Testing

On the weekend of March 13th, hundreds of piano students participated in the Student Achievement Testing program, a project of the Michigan Music Teachers Association. Steinway & Steinway designed pianos were placed in our recital hall, Steinway Gallery, teaching studios and makeshift testing areas where the students were tested in five different skills: Performance, Written Theory, Sight Reading/Transposition, Technique and Aural Awareness. The use of Steinway & Steinway designed pianos continues to reinforce John Steinway’s statement that “How well you play the piano very well depends on the piano you play”…… Congratulations to all students and participants in this very worthy program.

Patent of the Month
#’s 113628-113631
Designs for the White House Piano

It’s a real piece of Americana: this custom designed Steinway model D grand piano was a gift from the House of Steinway to the White House.  This month in the year 1939, the gilt stenciling by artist Dunbar Beck and the golden American eagle supports were deemed worthy of four protective patents.

Can you see who is playing the piano in the picture?  If you guessed Richard Nixon, you’re correct!  One of many avid pianists in the Oval Office, President Nixon enjoyed playing the White House Steinway for its superb sound as well as its gilded appearance.

The Steinway family had gifted a previous grand piano to the White House in 1903, which now stands in the Smithsonian Institution.  This led to the Steinway Art Case Collection, a continuing tradition of custom designing Steinway pianos for celebrities, events and individuals.
