Detroit Symphony Autographed Steinway

The Detroit Symphony and Steinway Piano Gallery have partnered to create a very special Steinway Piano. The Piano is a Model A 6’2” Steinway in ebonized finish and is currently located in the Donor Lounge at Orchestra Hall.
All handcrafted Steinways are highly desirable, but this piano is unique because throughout the 2009-2010 season, it’s plate will be autographed by all the solo pianists performing with the DSO. Imagine owning a Steinway signed by these famous artists.
Already, the instrument has been signed by Grammy award winning artist, composer and band leader, Michael Camilo, The internationally renowned pianist, Joseph Kalichstein, and more recently Kirill Gerstein, 2010 recipient of the 2010 Gilmore Artist Award. This unique piano will be a priceless treasure for years to come and is available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Orchestra.
For more information about this very special piano, call Wilbur Miller at 313-515-3425.

Patent of the Month
#1214237 Sostenuto Pedal

Did you know…

This month in the year 1917, Theodore Steinway, son of founder Henry Steinway, received the patent for his new invention: the Sostenuto Pedal.  A pianist himself and creator of many improvements to the instrument, Theodore added this third pedal to the grand piano in order to allow players to express a longer, more legato-style line in music.  When depressed, the pedal sustains only those notes which are depressed at the same time, allowing future notes played to be unaffected.  The sostenuto pedal can be found in the middle between the damper and soft pedals, and it is abbreviated in written music as “Sost. Ped”, “S.P.” or “ThP”.
