Steinway Piano Gallery Hosts
Detroit/Windsor Chapter of the
Piano Technicians Guild

On April 5th Piano Technicians from the Detroit/Windsor Chapter of the PTG gathered at Steinway Piano Gallery for their monthly meeting. Hugh Gulledge, piano technician for many of Michigan's arts venues, and Tim Hoy, President of SPG, made presentations on the preparation of new Steinways and explored the fascinating aspect of tone building and development. Steinway Piano Gallery salutes the members of the PTG and thanks them for their effort in making so many pianos throughout Southeast Michigan perform to their maximum potential.

Soundboard Bridge Dowels

The secret of Steinway quality has always been twofold: Design & Materials.  This month in the year 1869, C.F. Theodor Steinway designed the Soundboard Bridge Dowel, a minor part in the construction of the soundboard that has a major impact on the stability and longevity you’ve come to expect from your Steinway.  The ingenious design of this dowel allows vibrations to travel uninhibited from the bridge down through the soundboard and out into your living room or to the very back of a concert hall.

Sadly, many of the pianomakers of yesterday have been replaced by piano manufacturers who prefer to cut corners on the cost of quality materials.  This includes the soundboard bridge dowel, which is rarely found in its original hard rock maple design.  Instead, most mass-produced pianos feature metal screws and buttons which rattle and buzz, coming loose over time and restraining your piano’s natural vibrations.

“Only my loyal Steinway piano endures. Be it beaten or caressed, its gorgeous tone remains.” – Roger Williams
